Asphalt is the preferred material used to pave streets, parking lots, driveways, and other high use surfaces. The amazing physical properties inherent in asphalt are what make it such a top contender for any paving job. It is both adhesive and elastic, so it can stretch, bend and flex without breaking. It’s great for waterproofing and occurs naturally. Most modern asphalt is produced from crude oil, but large “tar” pits can be found in downtown Los Angeles and Trinidad.

What Makes Fiber Reinforced Asphalt Special?

As wonderful as pure asphalt can be, it also weathers over time. At high temperatures, like the ones reached in Phoenix, asphalt can rut, creating a bumpy surface. At low temperatures, cracking is a common problem. Adding synthetic fiber to the mix helps to create a paving material that is more durable, more elastic, and more resistant to damage.

Best Uses of Fiber-Reinforced Asphalt

Because fiber-reinforced asphalt can withstand temperature extremes and handle heavier traffic loads, it is ideal for areas like Phoenix where temperatures exceed 100 degrees. It also makes an excellent surface for highways where heavier vehicles often travel. Any area that sees a lot of truck traffic needs a premium asphalt product or concrete construction.

Concrete is not suitable for all situations and is substantially more expensive than asphalt. In areas where temperatures often drop below freezing, asphalt is the better choice because it doesn’t freeze as quickly. In general, fiber-reinforced asphalt is preferred, unless you’re talking about a very low-traffic area that only handles commuter cars.

Benefits of Fiber-Reinforced Asphalt

When dealing with asphalt in Phoenix, high temperatures are a common problem. If you use pure asphalt on your parking lot or driveways, be prepared to do a lot of maintenance.

With fiber-reinforced asphalt, you get a paved surface that:

Has a longer lifespan
• Reduces the risk of cracking and rutting
• Reduces the frequency and expense of maintenance
• Requires fewer resurfacing appointments
• Offers improved strength and durability
• Doesn’t cost much more than straight asphalt

Asphalt is supplied in several different grades. Generally, softer asphalts are used in colder temperatures and harder asphalts in hotter climates. The US government sponsored a multi-million dollar research project (Strategic Highway Research Program, SHRP) in the 1990s which developed new standards for asphalt binders called performance grade (PG) binders. For example, a PG 64-22 is meant for use where average surface (high) pavement temperatures in the sun reach 64°C (147°F) and lows reach -22°C (-8°F). Premium grades usually have polymers or other modifiers for use in heavy-duty applications such as intersections on city streets or airports or in extreme climates.

At normal temperatures, asphalt is too stiff to mix with the aggregates. There are three ways to thin it enough to make it mixable—heat it, dilute it with a solvent (cutback) or emulsify it in water.

Asphalt is a cost-effective way to pave a long-lasting surface that can endure just about anything!
